Hotel Room
As a cinematographer my days are consumed by the stories of others, traveling the globe to capture documentaries for a diverse array of clients. Each assignment brings a new narrative, a fresh perspective, but at the end of the day, I retreat to my hotel room. This space, more than just a temporary lodging, has become my sanctuary. It is within these transient walls that I find the freedom to express my own creative voice.
For the last thirty years I have spent 8 to 10 months on the road each year, I have come to cherish these moments of solitude and self-expression. Over the decades, I have meticulously crafted five distinct photographic projects, produced a 22-minute film, and created an audio soundscape, capturing the ambient sounds from within my hotel room.
These theatrical still lives and staged self-portraits carry a deeply confessional quality, offering a glimpse into my inner world. Through this book, I invite you to step into these intimate spaces and experience the intricate blend of solitude.
Five photographic projects
Still Life
Killing Time – A 22 minute short film
Hotel Room - 05:13 minute soundscape made up from recorded atmospherics, abstract sounds and music all made and recorded in the hotel room
The images are photographed using various 120 medium format film cameras (Mamiya RZ, Mamiya 7 II, Makina Plaubel 67 and Pentax 67 II). The 22 minute film was photographed using a Red Gemini with Angenieux lenses and framed in a 4:3 aspect ratio. The audio equipment used was a Sony D100 and a Zoom H4 Hand held stereo field recorder.
